Business Briefs
by Katharine Holland for the San
Francisco Spectrum
Are you a business owner and want to do more business with people
who are gay? Of course you do! Everyone who is in business in San
Francisco who is gay or lesbian-friendly should be a member of the
Golden Gate Business Association. It is the first LGBT chamber of
commerce. I personally find it so nice to have a warm welcome at
the monthly mixers. I love my GGBA family! It is fun doing business
with people you know and trust. Visit www.ggba.org
for more information or call me.

Chef Ramni Levy |
GGBA just celebrated 30 years – and is now over the hill
in gay years. Armistead Maupin, famous author and our own local
treasure, was at the big Gala to sign a few books, amuse us with
racy stories and remind us of the good old days he has captured
so well in print. Here is a photo of the two of us looking like
best friends, even though we just met! Armistead revealed his most
recent book The Night Listener, one of my favorites, is being made
into a movie. (I wonder if I am scooping People Magazine!) In preparation
for the movie, if you haven’t read it yet, do! And then go
read the investigative article that the New Yorker magazine did
on the book. One thing for sure is that Armistead will never run
out of things to write about in this city!
We are now entering the holiday season and we all know that means
thinking nonstop about food. Still stuck with the only the skills
to make macaroni and cheese, but you have caviar taste? GGBA member
Chef Ramni Levy is coming to your rescue. You probably remember
Ramni as a former owner of Bistro 1650 in the Richmond and as a
former partner in La Moone restaurant in the Castro. He is now venturing
out on his own.

Mark Rhoades |
Need a queer eye for your holiday party? Think of Ramni for catering
parties or even private dinners at your home. He can also coordinate
a “learn to cook” party for you and your guests. What
fun! Mark your calendar for Sunday, December 5 at 6 p.m., Ramni
will be teaching a class on Chanukah Delights at Sur La Table on
4th Street in Berkeley. Visit his web site for a complete schedule
of classes around San Francisco and the Bay Area at Sur La Table
and Williams-Sonoma. Contact Ramni at 666-3569 or info@bistroral.com
or www.bistroral.com.
It is a shame that so many LGBT people live in San Francisco and
have not brought property here. Many people have spent close to
$100,000 in rent and have nothing to show for it. No kidding. If
you are paying San Francisco rent prices, you can probably afford
a house. Mark Rhoades, Mortgage Account Executive at the Bank of
America branch in the Castro feels the same way – our strength
as a community is in buying property. Mark and I are putting our
heads together and hosting a free seminar for first-time homebuyers
on Monday, November 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Metropolitan Community
Church, 150 Eureka Street, Room 108. Do not be scared by the media
hype. If you really want to own a home, attend the seminar and find
out the facts. We can help you get in! RSVP to khsf@att.net
or mark.j.rhoades@bankofamerica.com
Contact Mark at 622-0660 or stop in his office at 501 Castro Street
(corner of 18th).
